Self Determination Theory
Understanding Seafarers’ Needs
Self-Determination Theory explains how autonomy, competence and relatedness shape seafarers’ motivation, engagement and psychological well-being. Life at sea can either support or frustrate these fundamental needs, making the working environment a key factor in promoting healthier, more satisfying and sustainable maritime careers.
Managing Job Demands and Resources
The Job Demands–Resources Model examines how workload, fatigue, leadership, crew support and communication influence well-being and performance at sea. While excessive demands may increase stress and burnout, adequate resources help maintain motivation, resilience and long-term occupational health.
Evidence-Based Interventions
Research findings can be transformed into practical actions through interventions at organisational, leadership and individual levels. Improving living conditions, strengthening leadership skills, fostering peer support and promoting resilience contribute to creating safer, healthier and more human-centred maritime workplaces.
Seasafe Programme
Building a Proactive Well-being Culture
The SeaSaFE initiative promotes a proactive approach to student mental health and well-being from the very beginning of maritime education. Rather than treating well-being as an optional topic, it is fully integrated into the academic curriculum, preparing future seafarers for the challenges of life at sea.
From Awareness to Practical Action
Based on research, industry experience and student feedback, the programme equips cadets with practical skills to recognise stress, intervene safely in challenging situations and report misconduct through appropriate channels. The framework combines prevention, resilience and evidence-based support strategies.
Connecting Education and Industry
SeaFE strengthens collaboration between universities and maritime companies by aligning academic training with industry expectations. Through recognised certification, institutional support and international partnerships, the programme contributes to developing safer, healthier and more resilient maritime professionals.
All on Board for Inclusion
Building an Inclusive Maritime Culture
Creating an inclusive workplace goes beyond increasing diversity. It means ensuring that every seafarer feels respected, valued and able to contribute to decision-making. A culture of inclusion strengthens psychological safety, improves collaboration and enhances both organisational performance and operational safety.
Preventing Harassment at Sea
Harassment, bullying and sexual violence have serious consequences for both individual well-being and vessel safety. In the unique environment of a ship, effective prevention requires specialised training, clear reporting procedures and practical policies designed specifically for the realities of maritime operations.
Supporting HR and Maritime Organisations
SWELL-NET provides tailored support to help shipping companies implement evidence-based inclusion and anti-harassment strategies. Through specialised training, customised guidance and policy implementation, organisations can foster safer workplaces, strengthen crew well-being and meet current international standards.
Positive Psychology & Measurement at Sea
Understanding Well-being at Sea
Seafarers’ well-being has become a strategic priority for the maritime industry. Research highlights the importance of understanding how life on board influences mental health, motivation and retention, helping organisations create healthier working environments and address the growing shortage of qualified officers.
Positive Psychology in Maritime Research
Beyond preventing burnout and fatigue, positive psychology explores the factors that enable seafarers to thrive. By fostering resilience, recognising personal strengths and encouraging simple evidence-based practices, organisations can improve well-being while supporting long-term engagement and professional satisfaction.
From Measurement to Prevention
Effective interventions begin with reliable assessment. By measuring well-being, resilience and organisational factors throughout a voyage, companies can identify the right moments to provide support, reduce stigma around mental health and strengthen both crew welfare and operational safety.
