The Seafarers’ Well-Being Network (SWELL-NET) is an international research and collaboration network dedicated to advancing knowledge, education, and professional practice in maritime wellbeing.
The initiative brings together researchers from the University of Oviedo – Spain, Munster Technological University – Ireland, the University of Crete – Greece, and Gabriele d’Annunzio University of Chieti–Pescara – Italy, combining expertise in maritime studies, psychology, occupational health, human factors, and inclusion.
Building on the experience of the Seafarers’ Well-being (SWELL) research team at the University of Oviedo, SWELL-NET was created to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the maritime sector today, including mental health, workplace wellbeing, diversity, equity and inclusion, occupational safety, harassment prevention, and the human factors that influence life and work at sea.
Our mission is to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry, promote evidence-based approaches to seafarers’ wellbeing, and support the development of a new generation of researchers and professionals in maritime psychology and human-centred maritime studies.
Through one international conference, a specialised training programme, stakeholder engagement activities, and collaborative research initiatives, SWELL-NET aims to create a lasting European platform for knowledge exchange and innovation in maritime wellbeing.
By connecting universities, maritime organisations, industry stakeholders, and early-career researchers, SWELL-NET contributes to building safer, healthier, more inclusive, and more sustainable working environments across the global maritime sector.
